Commoners

ABOUT

This is a writers’ residency dedicated to supporting the needs of area playwrights who have at least one produced play. The Commoners understands that every career in the arts is a self-portrait and endeavors to provide playwrights with the materials necessary to create theirs. The residency lasts two years and is designed to support three to six writers. The program is focused on creating community, networks and providing a supportive creative home so that writers can make their best work. Writers will meet bi-monthly to share work in a nurturing environment.  At one of these monthly meetings, GPTC will connect the group with professionals such as agents, composers, literary managers and artistic directors in order to gain greater understanding and connection with the wider theatrical landscape. GPTC will support writers with staged readings, retreats, dramaturgical feedback and a celebratory send-off at the end of their two-year residency.

Each cohort is chosen by jury through submission of work and a personal interview.

Commoners offers:

  • Guest speakers and artists from across the nation
  • Dramaturgical support
  • Staged reading support (1 per year) including stipends for actors and directors
  • Retreats
  • Professional development
  • Project planning support
